Too Much Sleep
Writer-director David Maquiling made his feature film debut and co-produced this independent latter-day American screwball comedy. Jack Crawford (Marc Palmieri) is a man in his 20s who is still living at home in the suburbs with his domineering mother. He works as a security guard at night and battles boredom by day. While commuting to his job on a bus one day, he meets an attractive young woman named Kate (Nicol Zanzarella). She is mesmerizing to him and they talk and ride awhile. After she gets off the bus, he discovers that his gun is missing. He sets off on a search for the missing weapon and finds out that Kate isn't what she seemed to be.
Director: David Maquiling
Starring: Marc Palmieri, Nicol Zanzarella, Pasquale Gaeta, Philip Galinsky, Judy Sabo Podinker
Maquiling has built and sustained a mood of lovely comic aplomb. Like one of its hero's daydreams, the film evaporates on contact and leaves a serene glow.
The movie's a gas. Very funny, to a rather dark degree.
It's nothing less than a spiritual journey set in New Jersey.
Rich and droll, and yet slight--a film of modest virtues, content to be small, achieving what it intends.
The movie is as modestly unpretentious as David O. Russell's "Spanking the Monkey."
