The Phantom

1916

Phantom Farrell (Frank Keenan) is a slick society criminal, as handy with the ladies as with his burglar tools. Successfully eluding the authorities for the first three reels, Farrell finds that he cannot so easily escape the soulful eyes of heroine Avice Bereton (Enid Markey). For her sake, the Phantom turns honest, jeopardizing his own life and freedom in the process. Like its spiritual ancestor, Raffles, The Phantom was a lighthearted romp with melodramatic undertones. Future matinee idol John Gilbert, still billed as Jack Gilbert, appeared in a minor role.

Director: Charles Giblyn
