The House Next Door

1914 Drama

Filmed in 1914, Lubin's The House Next Door didn't run in metropolitan New York until the summer of 1915. Based on a play by J. Hartley Manners, the film revives the old plot device about the animosity between a Catholic and Jewish family. Overcoming public hostility and private deprivation, the Jewish Sir Isaac (Gaston Bell) finally finds himself in a position to destroy his bitter Catholic rival Sir John (George Soule Spencer). But Destiny takes a hand, as Destiny is inclined to do in films of this kind, with a "symbolic" denouement. The obligatory romantic subplot concerns Sir John's daughter (Ethel Clayton) and Sir Isaac's son (Edwin Barbour).

Director: Barry O'Neill

Starring: Joseph Kaufman, Ethel Clayton, George Soule Spencer, Gaston Bell, George S. Trimble
