The Gambler

1909 Drama

This Pathe drama reminded many observers of several other films on the same subject, indicating that even as early as 1909, some storylines had already been used to death. Despite his wife's strenuous efforts, an improvident young husband simply can't stay away from the gambling tables. At the end of her rope, the wife finally sells all her belongings and plans to leave her husband. Rather than evince any remorse, the husband calmly pulls out a cache of hidden money and prepares to go gambling again. At this point, the wife decides to kill herself, further determining to take her young child with her to The Next World. Fortunately, the husband returns home just in time; having won big-time at the casino, he gives the money to his wife and vows never to gamble again. The English-language print of The Gambler suffered from ill-placed and inappropriate subtitles. more..
