The Chase

1907 Other

Chances are that this long-forgotten film, released in New York City in mid-November of 1907, was not titled The Chase. This name was bestowed upon the film by a writer from the trade magazine Variety, who saw the picture minus opening-credit titles. The film was a record of an apparently genuine stag hunt, with at least fifty hounds in pursuit of their terrified quarry. The poor stag takes to the water, then to the high ground, but the dogs are simply too fast and too plentiful. The scenes in which the stag is overtaken by the snarling canines, then put out of its misery by a well-aimed bullet, proved rather horrifying for filmgoers of the period and would doubtless have the same effect if seen today.
