Hell Below Zero
Hell Below Zero is documentary filmmaker Carveth Wells' filmed record of the Massee Expedition to Central Equatorial Africa. The expedition was an effort to retrace the steps of 19th-century naturalist Sir Richard Burton, including a dangerous trek to the Mountains of the Moon. An amusing sidelight of the film is Wells' insistence upon debunking several myths about Africa. When showing a pride of lions, for example, the narrator insists that these huge beasts are as apt to run away from humans as they are to devour them (that's easy for him to say!) Hell Below Zero was filmed under the auspices of the Minneapolis Museum and Chicago Geographical Society.
