Come Undone

2009

Two people unhappy in their relationships turn to one another in this drama from filmmaker Silvio Soldini. Anna (Alba Rohrwacher) is a woman in her early thirties who works as an accountant at a large insurance firm. Anna gets along well with her family and lives with her long-time boyfriend, Alessio (Giuseppe Battiston), a nice guy who thinks they should settle down and have a child. But Anna feels the excitement has gone out of their relationship, and when one of her co-workers, Domenico (Pierfrancesco Favino), begins flirting with her, she's intrigued and responds in kind. Before long, Anna and Domenico are having an affair, but while she's straying from a relationship she's not certain has a future, he has a wife (Teresa Saponangelo) and two children, and even if he's not always happy at home he's not prepared to leave his family. In time, Anna wants more out of her romance with Domenico than a few hours a week in a cheap motel, but Domenico makes no secret of his life with his family, and there's no resolution to their situation that won't leave someone hurt. Come Undone (aka Cosa Voglio di Piu [What More Do I Want]) was an official selection at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival. more..

Reviews

  • Soldini is able to take the shopworn theme and keep it interesting and fresh despite its lack of new ideas. He's assisted by strong performances by his two leading actors.

V.A. Musetto - New York Post

    19 January 2013

  • Never fails to be engrossing. That's because Soldini brings us vivid characters, and gets all the details right.

    - The San Francisco Chronicle

    19 January 2013

  • Like Mr. Soldini's last film, "Days and Clouds," a calm, very sad examination of the effects of a husband's sudden job loss on an affluent couple's relationship and social life, Come Undone is solidly grounded in mundane reality. If the movie tells an old story, its unvarnished realism lends it poignancy and depth.

Stephen Holden - The New York Times

    19 January 2013

  • This self-consciously modern movie contains classical pleasures.

    Nick Pinkerton - Village Voice

    19 January 2013

  • From its title on, Come Undone is as dully generic as is imaginable.

Joshua Rothkopf - Time Out New York
